TV station for UCSC - The UCSC.Tv

What is UCSC.Tv ?

UCSC.Tv will be the official TV station of UCSC which will telecast various audio visual programs through various media such as the internet, satellite TV, and tradition TV and radio stations.

What kind of programs it will telecast?

  • Educational Programs to cover both formal and informal subject matters.
  • News items related to UCSC and its staff and students.
  • Public awareness and promotional programs.
  • Entertainment Programs based on campus life
  • Other programs (films, tele-dramas, songs, etc...) produced by UCSC staff and students.


What are the advantages of having a TV station?

  • We will be the first institute to establish something like this in this country ( may be in this part of the world)
  • This will be a positive factor as far as the reputation of this institute is concern.
  • Every one will get to know about the capabilities of us, and it will help us and our country as a whole.
  • The quality and the capabilities of the students will be improved.
  • Can contribute to build the knowledge society of this country ( may be some other countries too)
  • Will help to extend our reach beyond this country.
  • A potential area of generate some income.


How the programs will be telecasted?

  • There will be an online site for the UCSC.Tv which will publish program schedules and available programs.
  • At any time there will be some pre-scheduled list of programs which will stream via the web as live audio/video.
  • All the past programs will be stored in a video archive for on-demand requests.
  • The live telecast will be simultaneously broadcasted via the satellite TV, on our dedicated TV channel.
  • Some selected programs will be telecasted on traditional Tv and radio stations on given time slots.


How the programs will be produced?

  • Time to time UCSC produce many formal educational videos for its students (e.g BIT degree program TV lectures), and currently have a large collection of such programs.
  • Usually UCSC make video footages to cover almost every important incident of it and currently we have a large collection of such programs.
  • UCSC has a talented student population and they too will able to produce various outstanding programs, from video songs to video documentaries.
  • Some room will be allocated for programs produced by other friendly faculties, universities or institutes.


Will UCSC.Tv be financially sustainable?

  • The expenses for the production of most of the programs will be recovered by underlying projects (e.g. BIT lectures from BIT income).
  • Most of the programs produced by students will not be cost oriented.
  • The programs telecasted by UCSC.Tv can be grouped into several categories according to different types of users. Some fee based subscription system is introduced to telecast some of these programs. These subscription fees will generate some income to cover the operational costs.
  • The existing recourses we have will be used in forming the UCSC.Tv, so the initial investment will be a minimum.

How the initial setup of UCSC.Tv can be done?

  • For the infrastructure of the internet TV station we may need the following;
    • Some dedicated network bandwidth for video streaming
    • One or more servers for video streaming, and to host the online TV station.
    • An Information system to manage the audio/video collection, Back-end management (May be to be develop as student projects)
    • A portal like system (something like YouTube!) to act as the front-end of the online TV station, again develop as student project.
  • For broadcast the programs via external TV channels, both satellite and traditional, we need to make a deal with relevant authorities.
  • Some commentators will be needed to present some programs (fortunately there are many students and staff members for this!)


Who can make the UCSC.Tv a reality?

  • The students will be a main source of quality programs as well as the human resources.
  • Various research groups at UCSC can make programs, at least make the script, relevant to there research areas.
  • The NOC could help by providing services related to infrastructure.
  • The ELC and ADMTC can help on producing professional programs.
